Tropika, Singapore’s conscious music initiative, is starting 2024 with 100% featuring London based producer Mina and Ghanian lyricist Bryte for an experimental club night fusing dancehall, UK funky, afrobeat, baile funk with syncopated rhythms from around the world. Mina and Bryte’s debut in Singapore is taking place at the nostalgic Intermission Bar at The Projector, Golden Mile Tower, on Friday January 26 from 10.30pm onwards.

Mina & Bryte first met in Accra, Ghana in 2017, and instantly connected over their shared love of club music. Since then, they have released several singles, and their debut joint EP “Abeka Bugatti” in 2021. The duo regularly performs internationally at festivals including Glastonbury, Primavera and Nyege Nyege Festival, and at headline shows in London at the Jazz Cafe and Village Underground. Their music has been supported by key tastemakers such as Lauren Laverne, Ben UFO, Tom Ravenscroft and Branko. Together they have an infectious energy, with a sound that fuses together styles from the UK, Ghana and around the world. Bryte’s multilingual lyrics skip playfully over Mina’s upbeat and distinctive production style, demonstrating how two artists from very different backgrounds can come together to create “exuberant, passionate, forward-thinking club music that slips between two continents.”

On a very special note, we are extremely excited to see the return of mighty Kiat with shamanic soultress Arunditha back on stage for a grimy, spiritual afro rinse out. 100% bossman, the charismatic SWTLKR is kicking the night off with Tropika’s Ramesh, a guaranteed hefty dose of global club energy.

We have Tropika’s very own Ramesh, and Space Out’s Suren and Zushan on deck duties.

SPACE OUT

Suren and Zushan Benny are both encouraging beings, which led to the birth of Space Out. With firm roots in turntablism and bass driven sonics, the duo returns from hiatus to the controls to salvage what’s lost in space. There is no gimmicky taint, just keeping their funk full and feisty. If you thought you knew what to expect from Space Out, think again.

Tropika Talk: Protests in Asia & Tropical Music

Artwork by Reza Hasni

On August 4th we bring you a day of deep discussions at Choice Cuts Goods + Coffee. First up is a panel discussion on protests in Asia, followed by an intimate chat with Sofrito: Tropical Discotheque bossman Hugo Mendez on tropical music.

———————————————
Panel 1: Protests in Asia
Time: 4.00pm – 5.00pm (45mins Panel and 15mins Q&A)
Moderator: Nyshka Chandran
Panelists: Kirsten Han (New Naratif, SG) and Viswa Sadasivan (SG)

Recent protests in Hong Kong have sparked broader questions about political resistance in Asia. In the past years, massive demonstrations in Taiwan, Malaysia and Hong Kong have sought to change the status-quo but just how effective have they been? Can Hong Kong’s youth-driven protests influence its neighbours? Singaporean journalist Kirsten Han and former Singaporean NMP Viswa Sadasivan will discuss protest culture in Asia and effective engagement with officials.

———————————————

Panel 2: Contextualising Tropical Music
Time: 5.15pm – 6.15pm (45mins Interview and 15mins Q&A)
Moderator: Nyshka Chandran
Speaker: Hugo Mendez (Sofrito, GB)

From South America to Africa, the diverse rhythms of countries located along the Equator reflect a melting pot of cultures. Lyrics, instruments and genres in these areas boast sonic influences that surpass national boundaries—for example, how Hindi music has flourished in Trinidad or Cuban rhythms in Senegal. In its years of bringing tropical music to dancefloors, London-based record label Sofrito has become a leading authority on these cross-border exchanges. Founder Hugo Mendez will be speaking to us on his research of tropical sounds and their lasting impact.

Free admission to the talks but limited space available. Sign up to reserve a spot.

About Hugo Mendez’s Sofrito x Nouvelle Ambiance tour:

Hugo Mendez recently launched Nouvelle Ambiance label pushes further down the same path – investigating and celebrating cultural and musical meetings with a vinyl compilation and photography book project centred around the Pan-African music scene in 80s Paris and upcoming projects from Wolf Müller and a host of producers and musicians soon to come. He also hosts the monthly Nouvelle Ambiance show on Red Bull Radio, covering percussive music in all its forms on the first Friday of the Month.

Equally influenced by formative experiences in the clubs of 90s London and many years spent travelling to find records and research the origins of musical scenes across the Caribbean, Hugo Mendez has a passion for percussive music in all its forms. His sets draw from a wide variety of styles and eras, from raw Caribbean carnival rhythms to the bass-heavy North London garage of his youth by way of undercover Congolese soukous, reggae experiments, classic Haitian Compas and afro disco missiles.

Panel Discussion 01: Creating safe spaces for all creatives
11.30am – 1pm (60 mins discussion and 30 mins Q&A)

Everyone deserves a chance to experience nightlife, art and live music. But structural, financial, social and legal issues can often exclude creatives in minority communities from participating in events and evolving their crafts. How can societies create a professional arts environment that doesn’t stereotype and segregate minorities?

Moderator: Nyshka Chandran
Panellists:
Audrey Perera (Festival Director of True Colours Festival, SG)
Daniel Bawthan (Music Producer/Athlete, SG)
Deborah Emmanuel (Artist/Performer, SG)
Prashant S (Founder of Intermission Bar and Committee at Pink Dot, SG)

Panel Discussions 02: Why cities should invest in music
1.15pm – 3pm (60 mins discussion and 30 mins Q&A)

A vibrant music scene should be a critical pillar of any smart city. Places with dynamic nightlife and a vibrant music eco-system reap long-term economic gains because they attract global talents who increase innovation and disruption. How do we get more cities to view music as a form of investment rather than a cost?
